The Stairlift Guide
A plain English cost guide. No salesman visit needed to get these numbers.

What does a stairlift actually cost?

The straight answer, with real prices, before anyone sets foot in your home.

Prices reflect UK trade guides and the Which? owner survey. Last reviewed July 2026.

A stairlift fitted on a carpeted staircase in a British home

If you have rung around for stairlift prices, you will already know the frustrating part: hardly anyone will give you a number. Some firms will not quote at all until a salesman is sitting in your front room. Owners report quotes for the same staircase varying by thousands of pounds, and "today only" discounts that appear the moment you hesitate.

This page does it the other way round. Here are the honest ranges first, what moves them up or down, and then, if you want it, the exact figure for your own staircase from a free ten minute home survey. No pressure at any point.

Most buyers pay less VAT than they think. Stairlifts are 0% VAT when the lift is for a person with a long-term condition or disability, and 5% for over 60s in most other cases. A proper installer sorts this out before quoting. The price you are given should already reflect it. If a firm quotes you without mentioning VAT relief, ask why.

Which type do you need?

Straight stairlift on a straight staircase

Straight

For staircases with no turns or landings. Standard rail, quickest to fit, often within days.

The most affordable option

Curved stairlift turning a corner on a staircase

Curved

For stairs that turn, spiral or have landings. The rail is made to measure for your staircase, which is why curved costs more.

Custom rail, made to measure

Outdoor stairlift on steps outside a house

Outdoor

Weather-sealed lifts for front steps, back doors and garden access.

Priced like straight, weatherproofed

What moves the price up or down

Why do people get one?

Not because of one dramatic moment. Usually because the stairs have quietly become the hardest part of the house. The washing basket goes up one arm at a time. The bedroom feels further away at night. Visits to the bathroom get planned in advance.

How the free survey works

Answer three quick questions

Staircase shape, who it's for, and when. That's all we need to arrange your visit. It takes under a minute.

Free ten minute home survey

A local installer comes out, measures your staircase, and talks you through the options that genuinely fit it: new or reconditioned, no script, no pressure. Bring a son or daughter into the conversation if you'd like; good installers welcome it.

Written quote, valid 30 days

One fair price, in writing, with VAT relief already sorted. There is no "today only" discount here. Take the full 30 days to decide, compare us with anyone.

Fitted, usually within the week

Most installations take a few hours. The person who measured your stairs is the person who fits the lift, and they tidy up after themselves.

What a fair installer looks like:

Free survey, written quote valid 30 days, no today only prices, VAT relief sorted before the quote, honest advice on reconditioned lifts, and the person who measures is the person who installs. Where The Stairlift Guide covers your area, the featured local installer works exactly this way.

Questions people always ask

How long does installation take?

A straight stairlift is usually fitted in two to four hours. Curved lifts take longer because the rail is made to measure for your staircase; the survey visit will give you an exact timeline.

Does it damage the stairs or walls?

No. Stairlifts fix to the stair treads, not the wall or bannister. If the lift is ever removed, a carpet fitter can make the stairs look as they did before.

What happens in a power cut?

Modern stairlifts run on batteries that charge from the mains, so the lift keeps working through a power cut, typically for several return trips.

Will it fit narrow stairs?

Usually, yes. Most lifts need around 750mm of stair width, and seats fold flat so other people can use the stairs normally. The survey confirms it for your staircase.

Is a reconditioned stairlift safe?

A professionally reconditioned lift from an installer comes fully serviced with a warranty, and has to meet the same safety standards as a new one. For straight staircases it is often the best value option, and an honest installer will tell you when that's the case.

Can I get help with the cost?

Beyond VAT relief (0% or 5% for most buyers), some councils offer assistance, though waiting lists for the public route can be long. Your installer can point you to what applies locally. If you qualify for support, a written quote is exactly what the paperwork needs.

What does a stairlift cost to run?

Very little. A stairlift uses about as much electricity as a kettle used a few times a week. Pennies, not pounds. An annual service (like a boiler) keeps the warranty and the lift healthy; ask for the service price in writing with your quote so there are no surprises later.

What if I only need it for a while?

Rental can make sense for recovery periods, typically £40 to £150 a month plus installation. For anything beyond a year or so, buying (especially reconditioned) usually works out better. Ask for both numbers and compare.
